Visualized: American Stock Ownership Nears All-Time High

August 9, 2024

The portion of Americans’ financial assets that are invested in public stocks is nearing an all-time high, just shy of the peak seen in 2021.

Investor confidence, a robust U.S. economy, and strong performance in recent decades have caused investors to allocate more of their investments to publicly traded stocks. Today, 41.6% of U.S. households’ invested assets are allocated to the stock market. That is a far cry from the early 1980s when less than 10% of Americans’ investments were tied to the stock market.

It is not only the portion of investments allocated to stocks that is growing, but stock ownership in absolute terms is also up. Currently, 62% of Americans own stocks, a 20-year high.

For a full breakdown of how stock ownership has changed over the decades, our friends at Visual Capitalist have compiled the infographic below.

This line chart shows U.S. households and non-profit ownership of corporate equities as a share of financial assets.
