Visualized: How U.S. States’ GDP Stacks up to G7 Countries

It’s no secret that the U.S. economy is the largest and most productive in the world. In fact, the U.S. holds such an economic lead over the rest of the world that the economic output of our nation’s individual states tops most of the developed world.
Comparing economies at the state level can account for differences in population and aggregate demand that can obfuscate comparisons between the U.S. and its peer economies.
When comparing the per capita GDP of each individual state, every state save one topped the entirety of the G7 countries. Even America’s poorest state, Mississippi, managed to have a higher per capita GDP than four of the G7 members, losing out to just Canada and Germany.
