Unemployment Claims Fall to 49-Year Low

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of Americans filing for unemployment fell last week. Initial claims fell by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted level of 201,000 for the week. This is the lowest level since November 1969. Economists had expected the claims to rise to 210,000.

The four-week average of unemployment claims declined by 2,250 to 205,750 for the week ending Sept. 15. This is the lowest four-week average since December 1969.
