Job Openings Hit All-time High

October 17, 2018

The Labor Department’s Job Opening and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) showed 7.14 million open jobs in August. This is the highest measure since the survey began in December 2000.

The total number of hires for the month also reached a record high of 5.78 million.

August also saw 6.23 million workers looking for jobs, a number easily surpassed by available openings. The confidence that workers have in the jobs market is highlighted by the quits rate, which tracks the number of workers who voluntarily leave their jobs, usually because they believe they can find better opportunities elsewhere. The quits rate for August was 3.58 million, a 12.7 percent jump from the same month a year prior.
