Small Business Sentiment Recedes Slightly, But Remains Historically High

The National Federation of Independent Business’s small-business optimism index fell by 0.9 in September after reaching a 45-year high in August. The seasonally adjusted level for the month came in at 107.9. While this is a slight downturn from the prior month’s record-breaking reading, it stands as the third-highest reading in the history of the index.

The September survey found that quality of labor was the most pressing concern for small business owners. Nearly two-thirds of business owners said they were hiring or had hired recently, but more than half said there were few or no qualified applicants.
