Household Net Worth Sees Big Gain in First Quarter

June 10, 2019

A turbulent fourth quarter resulted in a sizable loss for household net worth. The first quarter has seen the markets rally, and with them, household net worth has seen large gains. Household net worth grew 4.5 percent in Q1, more than making up for the 3.7 percent loss in Q4 2018. This is the largest quarterly gain since 2004.

Much of that increase came from holding in corporate equities, the value of which increased 12.4 percent. Housing equity continued to see sluggish growth, increasing just 1.7 percent for the quarter.

This data comes from the quarterly “Flow of Funds” report, which tracks the collective wealth of all American households.
