Despite Record Stock Market Highs, Most Americans Don’t Feel They’re Benefitting
December 5, 2019
The stock market is up more than 20 percent year-to-date and all three major U.S. indexes broke records last month. However, most Americans say the booming market isn’t benefitting them. A recent poll from the Financial Times found that 61 percent of Americans said the stock market’s performance has had little to no impact on their finances.
In fact, most Americans aren’t even aware of the performance of the markets. Just 40 percent of those surveyed were able to correctly say that the market had increased in value over the course of the year. Forty-two percent said they thought the market was about the same as last year, and 18 percent believed that it had gone down over the last 12 months.
