Unemployment Claims Jump to a 2-year High
December 12, 2019
The week following Thanksgiving, many Americans were thankful for unemployment benefits. The number of Americans filing for unemployment soared in the first week of December, jumping by 49,000, for a seasonally adjusted total of 252,000. This is the highest level since September 2017.
One thing we can all be thankful for is that the jump doesn’t seem to be linked to mass layoffs. Instead, economists posit that the holiday often sees big swings in unemployment, as more workers wait until the following week to apply for benefits.
