More Than Half of Small Business Owners See a Recession Ahead
February 11, 2019
A slight majority, 53 percent, of small business owners predict that the U.S. economy will see a recession in the next year. Though this was the first CNBC and Survey Monkey’s Small Business Confidence Index has included a question about the likelihood of a recession, the findings align with a broader trend of small business confidence waning.
The index reached 62, its highest level, in Q3 2018, and has seen a consistent decline since then, with a reading of 58 for Q1 2019. Today, only 52 percent of the 2,200 small business owners surveyed would describe business conditions as good, 57 percent expect revenue to increase, and 28 percent plan to increase full-time staff.
